Department of English

Overview

The Department of English houses a B.A. in English, with tracks in literature, language, and professional creative writing, in addition to a minor in English. It also houses a Liberal Arts Curriculum (LAC) of both language and literature courses, giving the department a strong liberal arts profile. In addition, the department offers academic English language courses — ranging from intensive and remedial to advanced levels — to the entire university community.

While the department operates on both campuses of the Lebanese American University,  the B.A. in English program is offered in Beirut only.

Mission

The mission of the Department of English at LAU is to provide students with strong communication skills in spoken and written English and to equip them with independent, cultural, and creative competence to meet the increasing challenges of educational, academic, media and other professional workplaces.

Students who graduate with a B.A. in English from LAU are prepared for professional creative writing and field-related careers, as well as for graduate programs in English studies, comparative literature, education, and other interdisciplinary fields, in Lebanon and abroad.

As an interdisciplinary program, the Department of English works closely together with the B.A. programs in Translation, Arabic, Education, History, and Philosophy, allowing students to broaden their horizons through elective courses.
