Minor in Chemistry

Overview

The minor in chemistry attempts to teach students about the relationship between chemistry and the world around them, allowing them to gain a broad introduction to the basics of theoretical and applied chemistry.

Pursuing a minor in chemistry widens students’ opportunities for further studies in fields such as professional health studies, chemical engineering, environmental chemistry, as well as in technical chemistry fields including cosmetics, textiles and polymers. The program complements premedical requirements for students interested in medicine. Business majors can gain valuable technical experience with a chemistry minor, and be prepared for the scientific job market.

Mission

The mission of the Minor in Chemistry to provide students with a supportive environment to learn the basic general principles in chemistry and the different related laboratory skills and instrumental techniques.

Program Objectives

The Minor in Chemistry seeks to:

  1. provide students with basic general information in chemistry through lecture and laboratory courses,
  2. provide students with the ability to work effectively and safely in a laboratory environment,
  3. provide students with access to modern instrumental analytical techniques and applications,
  4. prepare students interested in pursuing further education in health-professional fields, chemical engineering, technical and industrial chemistry fields, environmental science and scientific communication fields, and
  5. offer students a wider scope of job opportunities upon graduation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Minor in Chemistry, students should be able to:

  1. show successful acquisition of basic concepts in chemistry,
  2. demonstrate adequate experience in laboratory and instrumental modern techniques,
  3. be able to identify and solve applied chemical problems, and
  4. attain adequate preparation for any career related to chemistry or entrance into professional studies such as health and chemical engineering as well as advanced technical fields.
