Minor in Renewable and Sustainable Energy

Overview

The Minor in Renewable and Sustainable Energy provides students with fundamental knowledge and skills needed to pursue careers in the fields of smart grids, renewable energy generation and energy management systems. The minor is complementary with majors in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Mechatronics, Computer, and Electrical Engineering. It also provides added value for students majoring in Civil Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Business, Economics and Computer Science.

Program Objectives

Students that receive the Minor in Renewable and Sustainable Energy will have the theoretical and practical background to attain the following educational objectives within few years of graduation:

  1. Become leaders in the field of applied energy, championing sustainable energy solutions.
  2. Undertake forthcoming practical and research challenges for the betterment of society.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the time of the completion of the Minor in Renewable and Sustainable Energy, students are expected to:

  1. Apply engineering methods to design sustainable solutions to problems related to the generation and utilization of energy.
  2. Recognize and evaluate current developments within the multidisciplinary field of applied energy systems.
  3. Work effectively in and lead multidisciplinary teams.
  4. Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.

Minor Requirements and Eligibility

Minor Eligibility

Students from the School of Engineering (SOE), School of Arts and Science (SAS), Adnan Kassar School of Business (AKSOB) and School of Architecture and Design (SArD) may choose to enroll in the Minor in Renewable and Sustainable Energy. Students can enroll in this Minor in their second year of study.

Minor Requirements

  • To obtain this Minor, the student is required to complete 18 credits as detailed in the Curriculum section.
  • The student must achieve a minor GPA of at least 2.0 in the courses related to the Minor.
  • Up to 9 minor credits may count towards fulfilling the requirements and electives of the student’s major program of study as well. As a result, a student is expected to enroll in fewer than 18 new credits, since up to 9 credits may be transferred to the Minor.

Curriculum

To obtain this Minor, the student is required to complete 18 credits as per the below:

  • Core courses (3 credits)
  • General courses (3 courses)
  • Elective courses (12 credits)

Core courses (3 credits) - choose one of the following courses:

  • ELE300  Electric Circuits (3 cr.)
  • ELE305  Introduction to Electrical Engineering (3 cr.)

General courses (3 credits) - choose one of the following courses:

  • ENV200  Introduction to Environmental Science (3 cr.)
  • GNE335  Introduction to Sustainable Engineering (3 cr.)
  • LAS203    Sustainable Energy (3 cr.)

Elective courses (12 credits)- choose one of the following courses:

  • ELE521 - Electrical Energy Storage Systems (3 cr.)
  • ELE5261 - Renewable Energy Sources (3 cr.)
  • ELE529 - Design and Operation of Smart Grids (3 cr.)
  • ELE599D - Electricity Markets & Renewable Energy (3 cr.)
  • MEE5001 - Renewable Energy (3 cr.)
  • MEE505 - Solar System Design (3 cr.)

1 ELE526 and MEE500 cannot be taken together.
