Department of Computer Science and Mathematics

The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) is a dynamic and inclusive hub for learning and innovation. We are a vibrant community of faculty and students who collaborate on impactful research in the fields of AI, theoretical computer science, networks, cybersecurity, data science, applied and pure mathematics and bioinformatics, among others. With a dedicated and diverse faculty body, the CSM Department offers students opportunities for both academic and professional growth. Active student clubs foster peer interaction, skill-building, and extracurricular engagement.  Committed to a student-centered approach, the department ensures that learning experiences are supportive, enriching, and empowering for all.

The CSM Department proudly houses the nation’s first computer science program, launched in 1976. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, offers a robust foundation in the theoretical principles of software and digital systems. The program is designed to support both career-focused students and those aiming to pursue graduate studies.  In addition to honing essential computing skills, students delve into the human and social dimensions of computing and its interdisciplinary connections.

Our mathematics program, launched in 2010, offers courses in pure and applied mathematics, equipping students with insights into fields relevant to a wide range of applications, including the physical sciences and engineering. The program fosters a strong foundation in logic, proof-writing, reasoning, critical thinking, and the effective use of technology.

The bioinformatics program, launched in 2014, is highly multidisciplinary, encompassing courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics along with specialized courses in Data Mining, Genomics and Proteomics.

The CSM Department offers two in-person master’s degrees in Computer Science and Data Science. Additionally, it provides four online master’s programs in Computer Science, Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Applied Artificial Intelligence.
