LAS303 Visual Activism

Visual activism has been widely used and extremely influential in social movements over the past decade. This course examines the forms, causes, and consequences of visual activism when associated with the use of digital media. The students will explore the effect of images in their online circulation. They will develop a critical understanding of digital activism. The objective of this course is to equip students with tools to analyzing and develop a critical understanding of digital activism and its implications within a social context. Taking the 2019 Uprising in Lebanon, the Arab Spring, Black Lives Matter, and feminist activism among other contemporary activist movement as case studies, the students will produce a research proposal and an oral presentation on digital activism. Discussions in class will focus on case studies of a selection of images their circulation and their impact.
