INAR541 Furniture Design

[1–4, 3 cr.]

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of furniture design, blending historical analysis with hands-on practice. Through a combination of lectures and studio work, students will gain a deep understanding of furniture principles and develop practical skills to create innovative and functional furniture pieces.

The course delves into the rich history of furniture, tracing major movements from the period of late Renaissance and Rococo, to the Styles Period of the 18th and 19th centuries, Arts and Crafts, and modern and contemporary furniture design. Students will combine theoretical approaches with their previously acquired knowledge of materials, detailing and construction techniques to experiment on furniture design, technologies and processes.

Pre-requisite: INAR 332 Design Studio IV
