Master of Science in Industrial Engineering & Engineering Management


The M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management provides those coming from other engineering disciplines a significant opportunity to specialize in the management and optimization of engineering systems. This program responds to a national need for engineers who can manage and improve integrated systems of people, materials, information, facilities, and technology.

This is a hybrid program that combines specialized knowledge bases (concentration areas) leading to a non-traditional interdisciplinary education. The concentration areas consist in part of elective graduate-level courses from the university’s industrial, mechanical, and civil engineering programs, and graduate courses from computer science, economics, business, and international affairs programs.


The mission of the M.S. in Industrial Engineering & Engineering Management is to capitalize on skills and theories learned in disciplines other than industrial engineering to uniquely prepare students for successful engineering management careers.

Program Educational Objectives

The M.S. in Industrial Engineering & Engineering Management aims to:

  1. provide engineers coming from other engineering disciplines with a significant opportunity to specialize in the management and optimization of engineering systems,
  2. introduce engineers to state-of-the-art tools and methods used in the design, management and improvement of integrated systems of people, materials, facilities, information, and technology, and
  3. provide students with a unique, non-traditional interdisciplinary education that is tailored to students’ professional needs and interests.

Student Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  1. use knowledge of math and science to model and improve complex integrated systems of people, materials, facilities and technology,
  2. gain broad knowledge that encompasses the fields of finance and economics, production systems and manufacturing and construction engineering and management,
  3. use data analysis and optimization for decision making,
  4. provide support for systems engineering and project management,
  5. function as a professional in the discipline,
  6. develop an ability to grow through lifelong acquisition of knowledge, and
  7. advanced proficiency, including student-selected topics in optimization, production systems and manufacturing, infrastructure and construction management, and finance and economics.


The M.S. in Industrial Engineering & Engineering Management requires 30 credits of graduate-level courses. As for all master’s degrees offered at LAU, students must complete all the requirements for a master’s degree, including the accepted transferred credits, within six years as of the end of the first semester.

The credits are distributed as follows:

  • Engineering courses (at least 18 credits)
  • Project-based courses or Thesis work (no more than 6 credits)
  • Optimization courses (at least 6 credits)
  • Production Systems & Manufacturing courses or Infrastructure & Construction Management courses (at least 9 credits)
  • Finance & Economics courses (at least 3 credits)

The remaining 9 credits may be taken from any of the following concentration areas:
