Teaching Diploma in Education

Overview

Teaching Diploma (T.D.) students choose one of three areas:

  1. Intermediate or Secondary Education T.D. for students holding or working toward a B.A./B.S. in a major other than education,
  2. Professional Development T.D. in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education (ECE) for holders of B.A./B.S. in a major other than education, or
  3. T.D. in Elementary/ECE Education for students holding, or working for, a B.A. in Education.

Program Objectives

The Teaching Diploma Program seeks to graduate students who will:

  1. develop pedagogical content knowledge building on existing knowledge in their areas of specialization (knowledge),
  2. communicate ideas effectively in many modalities, critically analyze information and collaborate productively in a group setting, drawing on up-to date technologies (skills), and
  3. demonstrate professional dispositions including commitment to continuous personal and professional development, professional ethics and the profession as a whole (dispositions).

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Intermediate or Secondary Education T.D. Program will

  1. identify the key characteristics of the three main learning theories — the behavioral, the cognitive, and the social constructivist — along with and their implications for pedagogy and teaching,
  2. demonstrate knowledge of general curricular objectives, scope, and sequence and use this knowledge in planning,
  3. develop level specific pedagogical content knowledge building on existing knowledge in their areas of specialization,
  4. select, design, and implement appropriate instruction, management, and assessment strategies for teaching in the area of emphasis,
  5. demonstrate ethical professional practice, and
  6. demonstrate initiative in seeking out and participating in professional development opportunities.

Graduates of the T.D. in Elementary/ECE Education and the Professional Development T.D. Programs will:

  1. develop independence in analyzing seminal texts in education,
  2. transfer knowledge about teaching and learning to a variety of settings,
  3. analyze and synthesize information pertaining to specific topics in education,
  4. demonstrate elaborate professional communication skills, and
  5. engage in professional development opportunities.

Curriculum

The Teaching Diploma in Education requires 21 credits over and above the bachelor’s degree requirements. These credits may be taken in combination with the bachelor’s degree courses, or as a post B.A./B.S. program, and may be completed in one academic year.

T.D. in Intermediate or Secondary Education

The 21 credits required for the T.D. in Intermediate or Secondary Education are distributed as follows:

  • Core Courses (15 credits)
  • Teaching Methods Course Based on Major (3 credits)
  • Practicum Course Based on Major (3 cr.)

Teaching Methods Course Based on Major, post B.A./B.S. (3 credits)

  • EDU614 Teaching of Social Studies (3 cr.)
  • EDU615 Teaching of Math (3 cr.)
  • EDU616 Teaching of Sciences (3 cr.)

Practicum Course Based on Major, post B.A./B.S.  (3 credits)

  • EDU625 Practice Teaching Math – Intermediate & Secondary (3 cr.)
  • EDU626 Practice Teaching Science – Intermediate & Secondary (3 cr.)
  • EDU627 Practice Teaching English – Intermediate & Secondary (3 cr.)
  • EDU628 Practice Teaching Arabic – Intermediate & Secondary (3 cr.)
  • EDU629 Practice Teaching Social Studies – Intermediate & Secondary (3 cr.)

Professional Development T.D. in Elementary Education/ Early Childhood Education

for holders of a B.A./ B.S. in a major other than education

A total of 21 credits are required, including a Pedagogical Content Knowledge course that students choose based on their major, as follows:

  • EDU204 Educational Psychology (3 cr)
  • EDU310 Computers in Education (3 cr)
  • EDU330 Management of Learning Environment (3 cr)
  • EDU332 Educational Assessment (3 cr)
  • EDU600 Seminar in Teaching and Learning (3 cr)
  • Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) course, based on major
  • Practicum course: EDU420 Practicum 2 Early Childhood Education (3 cr.) or EDU424 Practicum 2 Elementary Education (3 cr.)

1 For the PCK course, a student may choose one of the following, based on major: EDU342 PCK/Math (3 cr.); EDU343 PCK/Science (3 cr.); EDU344 PCK/English (3 cr.); EDU345 PCK/Social Studies (3 cr.)  or EDU348 (3 cr.)

T.D. in Elementary Education/ Early Childhood Education

for students holding or working for a B.A. in Education

Graduation with the T.D. in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education requires completion of:

  • Core Courses and
  • One of three possible Requisites (listed below)

Core Courses

  • EDU600 Seminar in Teaching and Learning
  • EDU610 Advanced Topics in Education

Requisite 1

  • Three education courses
  • Two elective courses

Requisite 2

  • EDU450 Educational Development Seminar (3 cr.)
  • EDU460 Internship 1 (3 cr.)
  • EDU461 Internship 2 (6 cr.)
  • One education course

Requisite 3

  • Credits transferred from courses already taken within other majors (maximum 15 cr.)
  • Education elective courses selected in consultation with the advisor (6 cr.)
