Overview

The Minor in Translation builds interdisciplinary language skills, with a focus on bilingual communication, cross-cultural mediation, terminology management, and textual analysis. It prepares students for careers in media, film, publishing, education, business, law, healthcare, technology, and international organizations.

Mission

The Minor in Translation instructs students in the art of English/Arabic, Arabic/English translation and trains them to accurately reproduce various types of texts in these two languages. It helps them improve their command of English and Arabic by developing their lexical repertoire and polishing their writing style. Moreover, introducing students to the latest technology that is used in the field of translation, allows pursuing the Minor in Translation to become professionals with solid technical knowledge and skills.

Program Educational Objectives

A Minor in Translation will give students

1. A good command of translation from English into Arabic and vice versa.
2. The ability to translate different journalistic, economic, medical, United Nations texts and subtitle audiovisual content, and use the appropriate terminology.
3. The ability to apply technological tools to facilitate translation.
4. The ability to assume translation jobs in reputable institutions or organizations.

Student Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to

1. Evaluate the linguistic and cultural characteristics of different genres and text types.
2. Implement the right translation strategy for different genres and text types.
3. Apply the terminology appropriate to different genres and text types.
4. Use CAT tools and Internet resources for terminology and editing purposes. 
5. Assess translated texts to check for clarity and style.
