PHA567U Special Topics: Introduction to Healthcare Project Management

This course introduces pharmacy students to the principles and practical tools of healthcare and public health project management, with a focus on improving pharmacy practice and patient and population outcomes, notably in the humanitarian field. Students will develop practical skills to identify healthcare and public health needs, design innovative solutions, and plan pharmacy-led projects across clinical, community, and population health settings. Using a simplified project management framework, students will learn how to define project scope, develop objectives, engage stakeholders, allocate resources, assess risks, and evaluate outcomes. The course culminates in the development of a project charter and a basic project plan for a real-world pharmacy initiative, such as implementing a clinical service in humanitarian setting (e.g., refugee-hosting areas), leading a quality improvement project during outbreaks, or organizing a community health event. It emphasizes leadership, innovation, stakeholder collaboration, advocacy, ethical decision-making, sustainability, and the role of pharmacists in addressing healthcare challenges, particularly in resource-limited and humanitarian contexts.
