IPE200 Introduction to IPE and Communication Tools

This course is offered to Med1, BSN1,  P1 and Senior Nutrition students. Itintroduces the foundations of intra- and interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative care/practice (ICP/IPCCP) within healthcare settings. Students will explore the historical development of interprofessional education and practice, as well as the benefits and barriers associated with collaborative teamwork across disciplines. Emphasis is placed on understanding one’s own professional role within an intraprofessional team and recognizing the scope of practice, responsibilities, similarities, and differences among members of the healthcare team and related professions. The course also examines the shared values and principles required for effective teamwork and patient-centered care.  Students will develop communication strategies to collaborate with healthcare professionals in identifying and addressing the needs of patients and populations. Psychological safety is introduced to emphasize the importance that members of the healthcare team feel safe to express opinions, admit mistakes, and take risks without fear of ridicule or retribution. In addition, concepts of culture sensitivity, gender literacy and intersectionality are introduced to enhance communication during patient assessment, management, and handoff processes, promoting equitable, individualized, and culturally responsive care. An intra, and interprofessional case scenario is introduced for student teams from medicine, nursing, nutrition and pharmacy to discuss and apply the acquired concepts facilitated by a faculty from one of the represented schools.

IPE300 Teamwork & Conflict Management

This course is offered to Med2, BSN2, P2 and Senior nutrition students and focuses on developing advanced interprofessional collaboration skills required to manage conflict, strengthen teamwork, and improve patient-centered care within healthcare settings. Students will learn strategies to address disagreements related to values, professional roles, goals, and actions through simulated interactions with healthcare professionals, patients, and families using effective communication techniques. Emphasis is placed on understanding the characteristics and practices of high-performing teams in conflict prevention and resolution. Students will also explore how to integrate the expertise of multiple professions into informed decision-making while respecting the values, priorities, and preferences of patients and communities. In addition, the course examines patient safety concepts by distinguishing between person-based and system-based approaches to understanding medical errors, promoting a culture of accountability, learning, and quality improvement. Concepts from IPE200 are revisited and an intra-, interprofessional case scenario is introduced for student teams from medicine, nursing, nutrition and pharmacy to discuss and apply the concepts facilitated by a faculty from one of the represented schools.

IPE400 Ethics in an Interprofessional Approach

This course is offered to senior students (Med3, BSN3, P3 students and Nutrition Interns) and builds on the foundational knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in IPE200 and IPE300 to advance students’ competencies in interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative care/practice (IPCC/P). Emphasis is placed on ethical principles, theories, and frameworks that guide sound clinical decision-making within complex healthcare environments. Students will examine ethical dilemmas and other ethical concerns encountered in practice, while exploring factors that influence decision-making processes. The course revisits concepts from IPE200 and IPE300 to empower senior students to create the culture of intraprofessional and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Emphasis is also placed on the role of senior students in creating a   psychologically safe environment in training sites and future practice settings where members of the healthcare team feel safe to express opinions, admit mistakes, and take risks without fear of ridicule or retribution.. In addition, for senior students to apply concepts of culture sensitivity, gender literacy and intersectionality to understand how social inequalities affect patient experiences, healthcare delivery, and clinical communication during assessment, management, and handoff processes, ensuring tailored  patient-centered care. An intra-, interprofessional case scenario is introduced for student teams from medicine, nursing, nutrition and pharmacy to discuss and apply the concepts facilitated by a faculty from one of the represented schools.
