CHE340 Physical Chemistry

[3–0, 3 cr.]

This course introduces the molecular foundations of chemical processes through quantum theory and chemical kinetics. Topics include the postulates of quantum mechanics, the Schrödinger equation and model systems, atomic and molecular structure, and an introduction to spectroscopy. The course also covers rate laws, reaction mechanisms, temperature dependence of rate constants, and introductory reaction dynamics, with emphasis on quantitative analysis and applications relevant to chemical engineering. Emphasis is placed on standard model systems and engineering-relevant applications rather than formal mathematical proofs.

Prerequisites: CHM201 Chemical Principles, CHE311 Chemical Thermodynamics.
