ITA201 Beginning Italian

A beginning course in standard Italian designed for students who have no previous knowledge of the language. The course aims at basic proficiency in the language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, focusing on the use of the Italian sound system, acquisition of vocabulary and developing standard grammatical structures, reading of short texts and writing at the paragraph level. Emphasis is placed on students’ use of the language in authentic situations of everyday life, beginning to cultivate an appreciation for the richness and diversity of the culture. A communicative content task-based approach is used and opportunities are given to participate in activities and events. 

ITA202 Italian II

[3–0, 3 cr.]

A second beginning level course in Italian designed for students who have already a primary contact with the language. The course aims at strengthening vocabulary, accent, and especially grammar. The course gives a broader perspective on reading, writing, and listening, on a higher and more sophisticated level, building upon Beginning Italian (ITA 201). Past and future tenses will be included to give the students the opportunity to understand and communicate in a variety of situations. Emphasis is placed on students’ ability to think in Italian and respond quickly, without needing to translate. Students will continue to be exposed to the richness and diversity of Italian culture. A communicative content task-based approach is used and opportunities are given whenever possible to participate in activities and events.
