Teaching Diploma in Education
Overview
Teaching Diploma students choose one of three areas:
- Intermediate or Secondary Education T.D. for students holding or working toward a B.A./B.S. in a major other than education;
- Professional Development T.D. in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education (ECE) for holders of B.A./B.S. in a major other than education;
- T.D. in Elementary/ECE Education for students holding, or working for, a B.A. in Education.
Program Objectives
The Teaching Diploma Program seeks to graduate students who will
- develop pedagogical content knowledge building on existing knowledge in their areas of specialization (Knowledge),
- communicate ideas effectively in many modalities, critically analyze information and collaborate productively in a group setting, drawing on up-to date technologies (Skills), and
- demonstrate professional dispositions including commitment to continuous personal and professional development, professional ethics and the profession as a whole (Dispositions).
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the Intermediate or Secondary T.D. Program will
- identify the key characteristics of the three main learning theories, the Behavioral, the Cognitive, and the Social Constructivist, along with and their implications for pedagogy and teaching,
- demonstrate knowledge of general curricular objectives, scope, and sequence and use this knowledge in planning,
- develop level specific pedagogical content knowledge building on existing knowledge in their areas of specialization,
- select, design, and implement appropriate instruction, management, and assessment strategies for teaching in the area of emphasis,
- demonstrate ethical professional practice, and
- demonstrate initiative in seeking out and participating in professional development opportunities.
Graduates of the Elementary Education Program/ECE T.D. will
- develop independence in analyzing seminal texts in education,
- transfer knowledge about teaching and learning to a variety of settings,
- analyze and synthesize information pertaining to specific topics in education,
- demonstrate elaborate professional communication skills, and
- engage in professional development opportunities.
Curriculum
The Teaching Diploma in Education requires 21 credits over and above the Bachelor’s degree requirements. These credits may be taken in combination with the Bachelor’s degree courses, or as a post B.A./ B.S. program, and may be completed in one academic year.
