Teaching Diploma

Mission

The mission of the Department of Education at LAU is to prepare highly qualified educators committed to evidence-based practices, diversity, collaboration, and ongoing self-improvement.

The Department of Education seeks to be a leader in the region for preparing ethical professionals able to support a diverse student body learning in a non-native language, to work collaboratively with others with commitment to civic engagement, and to engage in continuous personal and professional development. In particular, graduates of the program will excel in the use of technology in teaching.

Program Objectives

Teaching Diploma graduates will:

  1. Develop pedagogical content knowledge building on existing knowledge in their areas of specialization (Knowledge);
  2. Communicate ideas effectively in many modalities, critically analyze information and collaborate productively in a group setting, drawing on up-to date technologies (Skills); and
  3. Demonstrate professional dispositions including commitment to continuous personal and professional development, professional ethics and the profession as a whole (Dispositions).

Teaching Diploma Programs

The T.D. program provides three options for the focus of study:

  1. Intermediate or Secondary TD (for students holding, or working toward, a B.A./B.S. in other-than-education major)
  2. Professional Development TD (in Elementary Education / ECE for  holders of other-than-education B.A./B.S.)
  3. TD in Elementary or ECE Education (for students holding, or working for, a B.A. in Education)

Curriculum

The teaching diploma consists of 21 credits, to be taken in addition to the Bachelor’s degree requirements. The 21 credits may be taken in combination with the Bachelor’s degree courses, or as a post-B.A. /B.S. program, and may be completed in one academic year.

Intermediate or Secondary TD
(for students holding, or working for, a B.A./B.S. in other-than-education major)

Graduates of the Intermediate or Secondary TD program will be able to:

  1. Identify the key characteristics of the three main learning theories—behavioral, cognitive, and social constructivist—and their implications for pedagogy and teaching;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of general curricular objectives, scope, and sequence and use this knowledge in planning;
  3. Develop level specific pedagogical content knowledge building on existing knowledge in their areas of specialization;
  4. Select, design, and implement appropriate instruction, management, and assessment strategies for teaching in the area of emphasis,
  5. Demonstrate ethical professional practice, and
  6. Demonstrate initiative in seeking out and participating in professional development opportunities.

Graduates of the Elementary Education / ECE TD will be able to:

  1. Develop independence in analyzing seminal texts in education;
  2. Transfer knowledge about teaching and learning to a variety of settings;
  3. Analyze and synthesize information pertaining to specific topics in education;
  4. Demonstrate elaborate professional communication skills; and
  5. Engage in professional development opportunities.

Option 1

  • Choose any three Education Courses

Option 2

Option 3

Up to 15 credits may be transferred from courses already taken within other majors.
The rest is to be Education electives, selected in consultation with the advisor.

Diploma in Learning Disability and Giftedness 

Curriculum

I. Program Objectives

Graduates who complete the Diploma will be able to:

  1. Use knowledge from theory and research to implement evidence based interventions.
  2. Demonstrate skills needed for differentiated instruction based on pupils’ needs.
  3. Promote collaboration and advocacy designed to improve quality of life of exceptional learners.

 

II. Student Learning Outcomes

Graduate students will be able to:

SLO 1. Actively implement effective evidence-based instructional strategies (O1)
SLO 2. Apply scientifically-based methodology to improve interventions for students with learning disabilities or giftedness (O1)
SLO 3. Advocate for and safeguard the human and civil rights of individuals with exceptionalities and their families (O2)
SLO 4. Identify and apply effective instructional practices for the education of gifted students (O2)
SLO 5. Evaluate progress of pupils using valid tools towards Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals (O3)
SLO 6. Adapt instructional materials and evaluation tools to multilingual context (O3)
