CIE434 The Civil Engineering Profession

[2–0, 2 cr.]

This course introduces students to the history and heritage of civil engineering and its specialized sub-disciplines. It emphasizes professionalism, professional registration, engagement in professional societies, and the importance of lifelong learning. Students examine the impact of historical and contemporary issues on the identification, formulation, and solution of engineering problems. The course highlights the societal, economic, environmental, and political impacts of engineering solutions with focus on innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, and partnerships for the goals. Team-based projects engage students in research on contemporary engineering challenges such as climate change, sustainability, and global cooperation in infrastructure development.

Pre-requisite: fifth-year standing.
