Bachelor of Arts in Education

Mission

The mission of the Department of Education at LAU is to prepare highly qualified educators committed to evidence-based practices, diversity, collaboration, and ongoing self-improvement.

The Department of Education seeks to be a leader in the region for preparing ethical professionals able to support a diverse student body learning in a non-native language, to work collaboratively with others with commitment to civic engagement, and to engage in continuous personal and professional development. In particular, graduates of the program will excel in the use of technology in teaching.

Program Objectives

Graduates of the B.A. program shall be able to:

  1. Acquire research-based pedagogical content knowledge with particular attention to the needs of diverse learners;
  2. Design effective learning situations and communicate knowledge in many modalities, drawing on up-to-date educational technologies; and
  3. Continually evaluate effects of their choices and actions on the learning process, collaborate productively in a group setting, and actively engage in opportunities to grow professionally.

Program Outcomes

At the completion of B.A. program, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze critically the contents and organization of modern school curricula;
  2. Apply theories of learning to instructional decision-making and curriculum design, with attention to diverse learners’ characteristics;
  3. Apply theories and techniques of student learning assessment;
  4. Utilize a variety of communication techniques suitable for learners in a non-native language, including written, verbal, nonverbal and media-based communication;
  5. Design and manage effective learning environments;
  6. Engage in a continuous cycle of planning, implementing, reflecting and improving professional practice; and
  7. Demonstrate collaborative and ethical professional practice.

Graduation Requirements

All programs of study include:

  1. Core requirements: These include general Education courses.
  2. Emphasis requirements: These include courses in the content area, such as English, social studies, math and science, drama, etc., and courses in methods, such as teaching of social studies, art education, etc.
