Minor in Chemistry

Overview

Chemistry is the basis for many fields related to engineering, biology and other sciences. Ultimately, most phenomena in biology, medicine, geology and environmental sciences can be described in terms of the chemical and physical behavior of atoms and molecules.

Therefore, a minor in chemistry attempts to teach students about the relationship between chemistry and the world around them, allowing them to gain a broad introduction to the basics of theoretical and applied chemistry.

Pursuing a minor in chemistry widens students’ opportunities for further studies such as professional health studies, chemical engineering, environmental chemistry and technical chemistry fields including cosmetics, textile and polymers. At the same time, the chemistry minor complements premedical requirements for students interested in medicine. Business majors can gain valuable technical experience with a chemistry minor, and be prepared for the scientific job market.

Mission

The mission of the Chemistry Minor program is to offer a consistent general program that provides students with a supportive environment to learn the basic general principles in chemistry and the different laboratory skills and instrumental techniques.

Program Objectives

The purpose of the Minor in Chemistry is to:

  1. Provide students with basic general information in chemistry through lecture and laboratory courses;
  2. Provide students with the ability to work effectively and safely in a laboratory environment;
  3. Provide student access to modern instrumental analytical techniques and applications;
  4. Prepare students interested in pursuing further education in health-professional fields, chemical engineering, technical and industrial chemistry fields, environmental science and scientific communication fields; and
  5. Offer students a wider scope of job opportunities upon graduation.

Program Outcomes

Students with a Minor in Chemistry will:

  1. Show successful acquisition of basic concepts in chemistry;
  2. Demonstrate adequate experience in laboratory and instrumental modern techniques;
  3. Be able to identify and solve applied chemical problems; and
  4. Attain adequate preparation for any career related to chemistry or entrance into professional studies such as health and chemical engineering as well as advanced technical fields.
